University of Gezira – Excellence in Education, Research, and Community Service

Establishment

The University of Gezira Library was established alongside the university in 1975 and was initially known as the Preparatory College Library. Over time, it evolved into the University of Gezira Libraries, encompassing multiple libraries across faculties, institutes, and specialized centers.

Objectives

  1. Support the university’s academic programs and scientific research by providing timely and relevant information to all library users, including faculty members, students, and the community.
  2. Select, acquire, organize, preserve, and provide access to academic information resources that align with the university’s curricula at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supporting scientific research topics.
  3. Oversee the administrative and technical management of all university libraries, regardless of type or level.
  4. Ensure full coordination with university units, particularly faculty departments, for book procurement and subscriptions to academic journals and databases.
  5. Design and offer training opportunities in library and information sciences for students and librarians, in collaboration with relevant academic institutions.
  6. Strengthen ties with national, regional, and international organizations specializing in library and information sciences.

Currently, the university houses 25 faculty, institute, and center libraries, collectively containing over 100,000 volumes in various disciplines in Arabic and English. The library provides services such as reading, borrowing, and information retrieval through CD-ROM databases like Medline (Medicine), AGRICOLA, CABI, and TROPAG (Agriculture). Additionally, the library benefits from full-text databases provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

A considerable number of computers are available in the libraries for information retrieval and cataloging through the WINISIS system, with some serving as digital libraries, such as the library at the Institute of Islamic Knowledge. The university’s libraries also house approximately 2,000 master’s and doctoral theses in various disciplines that have been defended at the University of Gezira.
